Gotham Girls Roller Derby Jeerleaders are recruiting for 2009 now!!!
JEER
[info]nattydotorg
Do you, or does someone you know, love the Gotham Girls Roller Derby? If so, get involved and be a part of it all! The GGRD Jeerleaders are looking for some new bad-ass bitches to recruit for the 2009 season and tryouts are right around the corner.

We are looking for females, 21 & over. You must be able to commit to practice 2-3 times a week in the evenings whenever there is an upcoming bout that your team is playing in (you will have approximately 4-5 bouts throughout the season). You must be willing to perform/dance/cheer in public at Roller Derby and other events. But, you not only get to psych up the crowd for the derby girls as they are in action, you also get to experience the thrill of 1000 crazy derby fanatics cheering and screaming for YOU, too!

Other things you should know:
• You are required to purchase your own uniform and pom poms and must be able to chip in for rehearsal space.
• This is not a paying gig. This is on a volunteer basis only and we do it for the pure love of derby and for the thrill of dancing, cheering, and having loads of fun.
• Previous dance / cheer experience is encouraged, but definitely not required.

PS. I don't know if I ever publicly announced this or not, but with the entire current Brooklyn squad retiring this year, I will be taking over next season as the Captain of the Brooklyn Bomb Squad. I have VERY big shoes to fill, and I'm REALLY sad to be leaving the Manhattan Jailhouse Rockettes, but I'm really excited to step up to the challenge. And I need some new squad mates!!! So if you are interested in knowing more about tryouts or anything else, please let me know.

Photos from the SAWCC benefit auction and more natty art news
natty art
[info]nattydotorg
Well, first off, tonight I'm hanging my latest solo show which I'm calling the "NYC Horror Show." Every piece represents one of those things that folks who dwell here in the city fear. Think... bedbugs or crazy cab drivers and things like that. It's been a lot of spooky fun to work on and a healthy way to vent my frustration at our own bedbug issues (two apartments in our building had them... we luckily didn't... but we still had to deal with the exterminator and all that crap as "preventative measures"). The show will be hung at Last Exit in Brooklyn. I believe there will be an official opening reception eventually (more news on that to come!), but for now, feel free to stop by anytime and check it out and grab a beer or two (it's a bar!)

Otherwise, clicky here for photos behind the cut of the SAWCC benefit auction that was held on Monday night! )

Gilbert & George

The Gilbert and George exhibit at the Brooklyn Museum is positively amazing. Granted, I'm a huge fan of their work. But it's wonderful to see so many pieces of their almost 40 year career all in one place. And seeing their gigantic graphic and vividly colored works looming large above you in one room? Just absolutely gorgeous and inspiring.

I honestly cannot recommend this show enough. It's up until January 11.

Be ’Very, Very Scared’ of Coney Island Without Rezoning, City Warns
NY Observer
http://www.observer.com/2008/real-estate/be-very-very-scared-coney-island-without-rezoning-warns-city-0

Back in the late spring, the city added a few new slides to its Coney Island redevelopment plan PowerPoint, presumably to assuage critics, that showed successively how the core amusement area has shrunk decade after decade to become just a pitiful shadow of what it once was. With the city's planned rezoning, the pitch went, Coney could come closer to its heyday and be large and lively by historic standards.

Now with Astroland apparently headed to amusement park heaven, the city added a new slide. "Coney Island: 2009?" the slide read, showing an overhead view with active amusements highlighted in orange, and a big swath missing where Astroland is today.

With this month's news that Astroland owner Carol Hill Albert has proclaimed the signature Coney Island amusement park closed forever after she couldn't secure a lease with landlord Joe Sitt, the Bloomberg administration seems to be that much more intent--or desperate, perhaps--on pushing forward with its rezoning for the area. The planning action, for which the city wants to secure Council approval in about a year, would take a large area zoned for amusements and make space for over 4,000 units of new housing, a retail center, hotels, and a central amusement district characterized by "entertainment retail," indoor and outdoor rides.

And what happens if there is no rezoning under the Bloomberg administration? "We all should be scared--we all should be very, very scared," said Lynn Kelly, president of the city-run Coney Island Development Corporation. "If we don't get that rezoning done now, what will happen is there will be more vacant property," she said. "We won't have anything to talk about but whether we want to go shopping at Bed Bath and Beyond."

As Ms. Kelly and other officials have emphasized before, city officials seem terrified that a future administration might change their plans or not have the fortitude to hold firm against Mr. Sitt, and thus want to get the rezoning done themselves before the end of 2009.

The problem at Coney, from the city's vantage point, is a recalcitrant property owner who owns most everything in the central amusement area (including the Astroland site) and won't agree to a deal to sell his land and give up his vision of redeveloping Coney Island himself. (From the point of view of the landlord, Joe Sitt, the city is boxing him into a position where he is forced to sell much of his land, and develop potentially unviable uses on the rest of it.)

Key to the city's plan is its intention to designate as parkland a central 9-acre swath of property by the boardwalk, much of which is owned by Mr. Sitt. Thus far the landlord has rejected the city's offers of tens of millions for the property, and his attorney has said the city's proposed zoning for the rest of Mr. Sitt's land would likely be unviable and may be impossible to finance given its specificity.

Earlier this week, Deputy Mayor Bob Lieber told us he was very much prepared to move forward on the rezoning, with or without Mr. Sitt's cooperation. Without him, the city's plan would change some: the 9-acre strip of land by the boardwalk would be left with the current zoning, and would not be given the parkland designation that the city has said is so vital.

Charges fly in feud over Coney Island plan- Daily News
BY JOTHAM SEDERSTROM
DAILY NEWS
Tuesday, September 23rd 2008,

In an increasingly bitter feud, a top Coney Island developer's lawyer has accused a Bloomberg administration official of a smear campaign to discredit the builder's plans for the aging seaside mecca. Lawyer Jesse Masyr charged in a two-page letter to Coney Island Development Corp. board members that president Lynn Kelly was mounting a campaign of deceit against Thor Equitities and its principal, Joseph Sitt. "Ms. Kelly's misstatements are both factually incorrect and unhelpful ..." wrote Masyr in the Sept. 22 letter, obtained Tuesday by the Daily News. "Make no mistake, her personal attacks on Thor do not create one new job, do not repair one inch of the boardwalk and certainly do not bring the city any closer to a viable plan to revitalizing this national treasure." Masyr even went out of his way to praise other Bloomberg officials as "[willing] to work with us and recognize that we have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to make Coney Island great once again."

A bristling Kelly issued a terse statement, saying, "I'm not going to dignify this letter by getting into a personal back and forth and I believe Thor's history speaks for itself."

Thor and city officials have engaged in attacks ever since plans were unveiled for Coney Island last November - when then-Deputy Mayor Daniel Doctoroff insulted Thor President Joe Sitt by calling him a "mall developer." Masyr's letter, which was sent Monday, apparently stemmed from a Sept. 8 column Kelly wrote for The News. In the letter, Masyr slammed Kelly for claiming:

That condominiums continue to be a key aspect of Sitt's plan for the area - even though Masyr says housing was scrapped by the developer more than a year ago. Still, plans for huge 900 square-foot hotel rooms - more than twice the size of an average hotel room - have critics worried Thor may be planning time-share apartments.
That Thor intends to keep much of its sought-after Coney Island property vacant, to bully city officials into meeting its controversial zoning demands.
That Thor's Summer of Hope promotion, which brought temporary attractions to Coney Island, was a "flop." Many rides were scrapped earlier than planned.
A Thor spokesman also declined to comment.

NY mayor trying to rescue Astroland amusement park
By VERENA DOBNIK | Associated Press Writer
September 9, 2008
NEW YORK - Mayor Michael Bloomberg is trying to rescue the historic Astroland amusement park from extinction. "It would be a great shame if the amusements, which have been around for so many years and defined Coney Island and this city as much as anything ... it would be a shame if we lost those," Bloomberg said on Tuesday.

The amusement park by the Brooklyn boardwalk was closed on Sunday _ "permanently," said Carol Albert, whose family has owned it for more than four decades. Albert said she gave up negotiating a two-year lease with Joe Sitt's Thor Equities when the private developer, which owns the land under Astroland, failed to respond to her request for a two-year lease. Astroland was under threat of closing a year ago, but Thor and Astroland agreed to a one-year lease extension. This year, Albert said she wanted a two-year lease to cover the summers of 2009 and 2010 because her hundreds of employees needed more job security. For years, Coney Island's future has been the focus of bickering among the developer, the ride operator and city officials. With two dozen rides on 3 acres, Astroland covers a large part of Coney Island. Albert sold the Astroland acreage to Thor Equities two years ago for $30 million and has said rides such as the Tilt-A-Whirl and the Water Flume would be dismantled and auctioned off when the park closed.

The historic Cyclone, a roller coaster, and the Wonder Wheel, a Ferris wheel, are not affected by Sunday's closure because they are separately owned.

Coney Island fans and community activists have accused the developer and the city of trying to gentrify the seedy neighborhood, where the old rides sit alongside freak show attractions. Thor had planned to break ground next year on a $1.5 billion complex including high-rise hotels and the city's first new roller coaster since the wooden Cyclone was built 75 years ago.

Bloomberg said: "What we're trying to do is to get Astroland to have another one-year extension of their lease so that we can get the rezoning done and then hopefully come to an agreement with Thor."

Albert did not respond Tuesday to a telephone call for comment on whether she would be willing to accept a one-year lease. Thor spokesman Stefan Friedman said no negotiations were under way with the city or Albert. But on Tuesday, the mayor noted that "there are private developers who have their own economic interests and then there's the public that has a broader interest, and we're trying to reconcile property values with what's in the public interest, and hopefully we will come to an agreement."
